Liane Lang, Shadows and Stowaways. 2nd-24th July 2010.
Lang's multidisciplinary practice incorporates film, animation, sculpture and installation, and ties together conceptual process, narrative structure and formal concerns.
For Shadows and Stowaways, Lang references the work of Surrealist photographer Dora Maar, creating an uncanny environment which blurs the lines between what is seen and what is thought to be seen, between the animate and inanimate.
Drawing from the environments in which she works, Lang has previously made eerie sculptural interventions in Eastern European Soviet sculpture parks, the Florence home of poets Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, and Rudyard Kipling's Vermont residence. For this installation with Squid & Tabernacle, her work references the previous life of the shipping-container gallery space as well as the urban dereliction and regeneration of the surrounding area.
Lang studied at Goldsmiths College and the Royal Academy Schools, London. She has undertaken numerous public commissions, most recently La Muralla at Portobello Road, commissioned by RBKC. Her work has been exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally including at Kunstverein Heidelberg, PS1 New York, FRED London and Saatchi Gallery London. In June 2010 Lang will mount a solo exhibition Mesmeric Monument at Gallery Supernova in Riga- a video installation in the gallery space, using footage from Riga’s historic monuments.
